MCI researched into the role of salaried versus elected officers within an association. The findings allowed MCI’s clients to better understand and energize their association. Our in-depth study found that salaried officers tend to run the association more like a business, focusing on the long-term success, whilst elected officers brought their specialist understanding of the association’s particular area of activity. The research offers best practice recommendations on succession planning and the integration of salaried and elected officers. It also demonstrates that it is critical to structure the association to ensure effectiveness from both types of officers and allow a constant flow of new ideas and objectives to keep the association alive.
