Engaging and activating audiences with a bespoke app

The Challenge

The World Federation of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology (WFITN), held their 13th congress from 9–13 November 2015 on the Gold Coast, Australia.  The congress aimed to provide a dynamic and innovative scientific program, showcasing the latest developments and techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of neurovascular disorders.

With previous congresses having taken place in leading world cities, the global community had shared their doubts to the organising committee of WFITN 2015 about Australia’s technological capabilities to host such an event. In order to overcome these perceptions, the committee was looking to hold the most technologically advanced congress with the highest standards.

Unlocking Potential

WFTIN needed a partner with creative and digital capabilities to engage and activate the delegates and reflect at the same time the country’s innovative, forward thinking and technological solutions. With that mandate, MCI Australia explored several options and approached a leading app developer to create an app that would facilitate engagement though a solution called ‘interactive sessions’.

Solutions & Results

While many technological solutions were employed, the bespoke congress app linked much of this technology together.

Its key features included:

  • Delegate messaging: allowing for delegates to send private messages to other delegates
  • Access to the full delegate list
  • Activity feed: a social media type feed allowing for delegates to comment and view comments about the overall event

With the use of the app, standard live audience voting was turned into an interactive experience that allowed participants to submit questions and write comments which were projected onto the 27m screen alongside the speaker and their presentation. The congress app was launched two weeks prior to the event and had been advertised to the delegates to maximise its use and increase participation. As a result, over 280 questions were sent through during the congress and the app reached overall 89,306 page views.

The bespoke app was a success with 47% of delegates rating it as ‘excellent’ and qualifying it as easy to use, highly useful and made for an easier and non-disruptive communication.
